Annuity – a sum of money payable yearly or at other regular intervals.
Bequest – a gift or legacy left by will, typically personal property or assets.
Campaign – an organized effort to raise a certain amount of money for a particular purpose in a specified period of time.
Charitable Gift Annuity – typically an agreement in which you transfer cash or other assets to a charitable organization in exchange for its promise to pay you an annuity for life.
Charitable Trust – a trust having a charitable organization as a beneficiary.
Cultivate – to strategically engage and maintain the interest and involvement of a donor, prospective donor or volunteer with an organization, its people, plans and programs.
Development – the total process by which an organization increases public understanding of its mission and acquires financial support for its programs.
Endowment – an amount of money given to the university with a stipulation that the funds are invested to earn annual interest rather than spent immediately. A portion of the annual earnings is used and the rest of the earnings are reallocated back into the fund’s principal to ensure the endowment continues to grow and yield more interest for future support.
Fiduciary – a person or institution legally responsible for the management, investment and distribution of funds. Examples include trustees, executors and administrators.
Gifts in Kind – a donation of tangible personal property such as works of art; jewelry; antiques; coin, stamp and other collections; automobiles; manuscripts; and books.
Living Trust (Revocable) – a revocable trust established by a grantor during his or her lifetime in which the grantor transfers some or all of his or her property into the trust.
Living Will – a legal document directing that the maker's or signer's life is not to be artificially supported in the event of a terminal illness or accident.
Matching Gift – a donation made by a company or individual in response to the charitable donation of another. Matching gift programs are provided by many employers who match the charitable donations of their employees. Some are dollar for dollar, while others triple or even quadruple the amount of the original donation.
Stewardship – a process by which an organization seeks to be worthy of continued philanthropic support, including the acknowledgement of gifts, donor recognition and thanks, the honoring of donor intent, prudent investment of gifts, and the effective use of funds to further the mission of the organization.
